Sunderland AFC was mired in a cycle of underperformance when Kristjaan Speakman entered the building in late 2020. It was obvious that they had grown too large for League One but too small to escape it. Speakman arrived with a plan and a clipboard, not with flashy press conferences or fireworks.

He assisted Sunderland in recalibrating what had seemed like a stumbling operation by concentrating on a youth-led approach and revamping the recruitment model. In an effort to find temporary solutions, the team stopped acquiring players. Rather, they discovered value in younger legs, fostering potential that had been disregarded before.

The culmination of hundreds of minor choices, rather than a single match, marked the turning point. While some players were flipped for handsome profits, others went on to become breakout stars. Indeed, some of them didn’t work out. At last, though, Sunderland was building rather than patching.

They were promoted from League One by 2022. They won the Championship play-offs at Wembley in 2025, regaining a Premier League spot that many believed they had permanently lost. Each of the three iconic Wembley triumphs the team recorded during those years served as a reminder that Sunderland had ceased observing history and had begun rewriting it.

Speakman rarely dominated headlines despite his extraordinary skill at reshaping structure. He wasn’t a media-hungry or theatrical person. Rather, he was directing from behind the scenes, making sure the team ran smoothly and that analysts and coaches coordinated.

Sunderland’s football operations significantly improved, and recruitment became more discerning. In 2023, when supporters were still doubting whether Speakman’s methodical approach could produce results in the top two divisions, I recall watching a press conference. He talked about “building habits, not hype” that day, and I found myself thinking about it because of its straightforwardness.

The outcomes eventually validated his theory. The club gained notoriety for seeing young talent before others did. They turned underappreciated assets into important contributors and brought in players like Jobe Bellingham. Once hazy, their identities became remarkably distinct.

However, changes tend to come gradually, then all at once. The dynamic changed when Florent Ghisolfi joined in July 2025. Ghisolfi’s ambition and style were distinctly European. He oversaw a summer transfer window that brought in 15 new players, none of whom were British. The tone shifted. The tempo shifted. And the club started driving a little differently.

Speakman’s more subdued demeanor became less significant to some. Ghisolfi was obviously in charge of the hiring process thanks to his active involvement and wider continental network. By February 2026, Speakman’s exit seemed more like a logical progression than a dismissal.

He expressed gratitude rather than resentment in his parting remarks. He expressed gratitude to his fans, staff, and family. He talked about pride—not in his own profile, but in the club’s efforts to reestablish ties with its supporters and the region. The sentimentality wasn’t too strong. Just be truthful.

Record-breaking victories and spectacular transfers are not the foundation of Speakman’s legacy. Its foundation is the development of process trust. On laying the groundwork. On demonstrating that a club can rise from mediocrity to relevance through astute hiring and a shared football philosophy.

Football operations are now completely under Florent Ghisolfi’s control. There is a genuine sense of optimism in the air, and he contributes especially creative ideas and audacious energy. With a team that is deeper and much faster than in previous years, Sunderland appears ready to solidify their place in the Premier League.

However, it’s crucial to keep in mind who started the seeds. Speakman came at a time when the club was worn out, disbanded, and uncertain of its future. He remained calm. He had a long-term perspective. He gave Sunderland’s ascent a sense of purpose.

Rarely does this type of departure receive the publicity that comes with winning a title, but it ought to. Since what Kristjaan Speakman created will probably influence Sunderland’s future for years to come, even though he is now moving on.

He was largely responsible for their modern renaissance, and the scaffolding he installed is still remarkably sturdy.

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
