The worst of it had already happened to Joan Collins. She battled pneumonia for five weeks in December 2025, a lengthy and taxing hospital stay that Gemma Collins later referred to as the most difficult time in her life. Joan overcame it. She returned home. There were quieter days spent with family, a 50th wedding anniversary to celebrate with her husband Alan, and a tentative sense that the worst had passed. Then the pneumonia returned in June 2026.

The second round proceeded more quickly. Within six months of her initial hospital stay, Joan, 70, who already had rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease that weakens the immune system and makes people much more susceptible to respiratory infections, was admitted to the hospital once more. “Sending my mummy so much love; she has caught pneumonia, but she is doing well. Thank you to all the wonderful nurses and doctors for looking after her,” Gemma said to her fans at the time, straightforward and honestly she has always interacted with the public. Mama, you still look glam.” That specific detail, which is still glamorous, is the kind of thing a daughter notices while attempting to maintain optimism in a hospital hallway.

On July 29, 2026, Joan passed away. Gemma posted a black-and-white photo of her mother grinning along with the announcement on Instagram. Her tribute was lengthy and detailed in the way that grief frequently causes people to become specific; rather than making generalizations about love, it focused on the specific things that will be missed, such as her voice, her smile, her “little ways,” and how the house would sound different without her. “The house will never sound the same without you,” Gemma wrote. “Your voice, your smile, your little ways, they are woven into every corner of my life.” Only someone who has already begun to notice the silence would say something like that.

In Gemma’s public life, Joan was more than just a supporting character. Over the years, she made appearances on TOWIE, gaining a following among viewers. She also made an appearance in a Who Do You Think You Are? episode in 2024. Alongside Gemma, where they discussed their shared family history. Viewers who had watched Gemma for years felt as though they knew Joan in some small way because of the warmth that came through on camera. Because of this familiarity, the news of her passing was more difficult to accept than it might have been for someone who had kept a completely private life.

In recent months, pneumonia has been taking lives at a rate that has drawn increased medical attention. Only a few weeks after the actor Sam Neill passed away from the same illness, Joan’s death sparked increased attention to how deadly pneumonia is, especially for elderly patients with underlying autoimmune or inflammatory diseases. In particular, rheumatoid arthritis is becoming more widely acknowledged as a factor that makes recovering from respiratory infections more difficult. This is due in part to the fact that both the disease and the drugs used to treat it suppress immune function. It’s impossible to say whether Joan’s case might have turned out differently with different timing or treatment, so it’s important to exercise caution when drawing conclusions that the facts don’t fully support. It is evident that her body was ultimately unable to recover from the combination of recurrent pneumonia and weakened immunity at the age of 70.

Observing the public’s reaction to Joan’s passing, it seems that people saw something in Gemma’s tribute that went beyond celebrity grief. Losing a mother is not a unique experience. Many people can relate to the fear of witnessing a loved one return to the hospital for the same illness from which they barely survived the first time.

    About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time โ€” often with very little independent information to guide them.
