When Cain Velasquez was younger, he had the impression that he was unbreakable. This is not in the sense of a mythical figure, but rather in the sense of a heavyweight fighter who is known for his relentless pace, compact power, and the kind of conditioning that made men who were heavier than him appear exhausted by the third round.
When he defeated Brock Lesnar in 2010 to win the heavyweight title in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the violence appeared to be clinical. Managed and organized. Very close to surgical. He was not outspoken. He had no reason to be there.

Not bravado but hard work was the driving force behind Velasquez’s rise to fame. When he was training at American Kickboxing Academy, his teammates used to say that his workouts were very similar to being punished. It seemed as though the clock did not matter to him because he would wrestle for five minutes, then box for five minutes, and then wrestle again.
I remember watching him when he was at the height of his abilities and thinking that this was what heavyweight skill could look like if it did not rely solely on size.
The fact that he has a record of 14 wins and three losses does not tell the whole story. He was plagued by injuries. knees, back, and shoulders are all affected. Each comeback appeared to be at risk. Every victory was hard-earned.
It was already the middle of the 2010s when he began to shift his focus from champion to what-ifs.
Surprisingly, retirement came to pass. The next step was a brief stint in the professional wrestling industry. In Mexico, he began wearing a mask, and he smiled more frequently when he appeared in public. He also entered the WWE rings. I had the impression that the fighter was transitioning into something else.
The particulars are now well known to you. It was decided to release a man who was accused of sexually abusing Velasquez’s young son from jail. A vehicle that was carrying the accused was pursued by Velasquez, who fired multiple shots during the course of the 11-mile chase that took place in Santa Clara County. No blow was delivered to the alleged abuser. His stepfather sustained an injury.
During that very instant, the story began to break apart.
Some people witnessed a father who was pushed beyond his rational limits. Some individuals witnessed vigilantism that put bystanders in danger. Both of the responses were significant. No one was able to eliminate the consequences.
Velasquez was taken into custody, charged with attempted murder, and ultimately entered a plea of no contest to the charges and the related felonies. His sentence was five years in prison, with credit for time served, and it was handed down in the year 2024. In February of this year, he was granted parole following approximately three hundred days spent in prison and years spent under house arrest.
People who had previously witnessed Cain Velasquez dominate cages were unnerved by the sight of him restrained in handcuff confinement.
According to the majority of accounts, it also made him feel uneasy.
He began posting his musings on the internet while he was incarcerated. These musings included topics such as breathwork, meditation, sweat lodges, and reestablishing his connection to his Yaqui heritage. There was no defensiveness in the tone. It was an investigation.
He discussed the concept of accountability. In spite of his actions, he did not deny them. It was portrayed by him as a situation in which anger triumphed over judgment.
Fighters are not strangers to the emotion of anger. There is a distinction to be made between the controlled aggression that occurs within a cage and the uncontrolled reaction that occurs on a highway. The difference turned out to be a burden for him.
A number of prominent figures in the mixed martial arts community expressed their support for him. Several letters were composed. There have been statements made. Justice and mercy were being discussed by the community that had previously cheered for his knockouts.
When I found myself reading those responses, I couldn’t help but wonder how many other people were privately struggling with the same unsettling thought: what would I do?
In his own words, prison turned out to be a place where he unexpectedly found himself reflecting. He detailed his experience administering breathing exercises to other prisoners. Following his encounters with individuals whom he believed to have been let down by the system, he became an advocate for wrongful conviction review commissions.
When it comes to image repair, it would be simple to disregard this. Moreover, it would be overly simplistic.
Velasquez has conveyed a certain level of intensity throughout his entire career; however, there is something noticeably slower in his most recent words. Intended to be. Measured out. In the same way that he used to talk about wrestling drills, he continues to talk about ways to relieve stress and reset emotions.
Following his release on February 15, he made public his intention to organize a holotropic breathing seminar that would take place in the San Jose area for a single day. An event that requires payment. Only a limited capacity. Breathing exercises, questions and answers, and group discussion.
The transformation from heavyweight champion to breathwork facilitator was not a turn of events that anyone anticipated.
Along the same lines as fighting, breathwork requires presence. Therefore, it is necessary to sit in discomfort. The longer you think about it, the less surprising it seems to be that Velasquez might now be channeling his intensity inward rather than outward.
There is still a pending criminal case against Goularte. Ongoing civil litigation is not over. It would be impossible to reduce the story’s emotional core to headlines because it revolves around a child and a family.
Having stated that he accepts responsibility for his actions, Velasquez has done so. That sentence is significant. Furthermore, the fact that an innocent man was hurt is also significant.
Even if there is redemption in this place, it will not be a dramatic event. There will be a gradual approach.
There is a strong temptation to portray his release as either a significant victory or a tragic event. And it is neither. There is a continuation here.
He is exactly 43 years old. One of his former spheres of influence, the heavyweight division of the UFC, now appears very different. Most of the names in the rankings are younger. The number of injuries has increased. One would think that a comeback fight is highly improbable, if not physically impossible.
More recently, he has been speaking less about his legacy and more about his growth in interviews and posts. Instead of focusing on titles, the focus should be on sonhood. He writes about the experience of hiking barefoot in the redwoods, about the solitude of the mountains, about the spirit, and about grief.
One is able to demonstrate skepticism regarding the transformation of the public. Furthermore, it is possible to acknowledge that confinement leads to changes in individuals.
The story of Velasquez is currently situated at a point of unease, where love and law, violence and healing, and strength and restraint are all occurring simultaneously.
At one point in time, he was referred to as the most skilled heavyweight of his era, skill compared to skill. In terms of rounds and victories, the cage was used to evaluate that skill.
When viewed from the outside, it is measured differently. It remains to be seen whether breathwork seminars will become a chapter that will last or a phase that will serve as a transition. The passage of time, consistency, and humility will determine whether or not there is another shift in public opinion.
For the time being, Cain Velasquez is free to go. Not as the unbeatable force that some people once envisioned, and not as the caricature that others attempted to paint, but rather as something more complicated — a man who acted, paid, and is now attempting to rebuild in a manner that feels quieter than his prime ever was.
