    Franco Baresi’s illness

Those who watched the 1994 World Cup final still discuss a particular moment. After only 25 days of recuperation following his meniscus tear during the group stage, Franco Baresi made a comeback for Italy against Brazil. He spent the entire 120 minutes on the field. He defended himself as if the injury had never occurred. He then took the lead in the penalty shootout but was unsuccessful. Italy was defeated. The picture of Baresi leaving that location after giving it his all in the most important game of his career and failing on the last kick is the kind of thing that sticks in your memory. The fact that he appeared at all speaks volumes about the man.

He passed away at the age of 66 on July 31, 2026, in a hospital in Rozzano, which is located just south of Milan. Beginning in August 2025, when he had minimally invasive surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule—a tiny, abnormal growth in the lung found during what were described as routine medical checks—the illness had been worsening for just under a year. Consolidative immunotherapy, a treatment strategy intended to lower the risk of recurrence in patients whose nodules exhibit malignant characteristics, was prescribed by his doctors following the procedure. Baresi handled the revelation discreetly. There was no long-form public commentary or dramatic announcement. He handled it in the manner that he appears to have handled most situations.

When he and former Italy teammate Giuseppe Bergomi were selected as unexpected torchbearers for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony in February 2026, it was his last public appearance. They carried the flame through the San Siro. In this stadium, Baresi played his whole career, where his retired number six shirt is displayed, and where a celebration game was held in his honor following his retirement in 1997. Likely, the location of that torch-bearing moment was carefully chosen. It’s more difficult to determine whether everyone in attendance that evening realized they were witnessing his last public appearance. Even Baresi might not have known.

As his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Rozzano by late July 2026. Fans posted pictures, former players shared memories, and Matteo Salvini was among those who sent condolences after the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport mistakenly reported his death on July 29. AC Milan quickly corrected the report in a statement. He was still alive. He wasn’t two days later. That sequence, which shows how thin the line had become, is unsettling because of the false report, the correction, and the death that followed so swiftly.

Baresi had previously experienced a severe illness. When he was 21 years old in 1981, a blood infection kept him out of action for almost four months and got so bad that he had to use a wheelchair for a while, making his football career truly uncertain. After making a full recovery, he went on to lead Milan for 15 seasons, winning 6 league titles and 3 European Cups while creating what many still believe to be the best defensive unit in history with Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta. In 34 Serie A games in 1993–94, the Milan team gave up just 15 goals. A record that remains intact.

The idea of the indestructible defender—the player who holds the line, absorbs everything, and never gives up—has a special connection to football. Probably the most complete example of that archetype the sport has produced was Baresi. There was something almost dissonant about witnessing his illness develop in silence over the course of a year that was largely spent out of the public eye. The man who raised his arm to call offside, who read the game faster than most players could think, who came back from a torn knee to play a World Cup final. died at age 66 as a result of a lung nodule discovered during a routine examination. There are no exceptions in football.

    About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
