Even seemingly insignificant things like strolling home from work, looking through old pictures, or listening to a song from a different year can make someone miss their former self. even though they weren’t exactly flourishing as that version of themselves. People don’t realize how frequently it occurs.

    It is sometimes referred to by psychologists as a form of pre-healing nostalgia, an academic term that captures something profoundly human. The concept is straightforward: people don’t always remember the suffering, dysfunction, or mayhem of their past. The emotional atmosphere surrounding it—its simplicity, lack of self-awareness, and peculiar freedom of not yet knowing better—is what they miss.

However, self-editing comes at a price. Something is removed.

    Surprisingly, a lot of people express a desire to return to their pre-self-improvement selves. Anonymous Reddit users express nostalgia for the times when they didn’t analyze every emotion or establish boundaries in every relationship. Life felt “lighter before I knew what I needed to fix,” according to one commenter. Another acknowledged that they miss their innocence. It’s difficult to ignore the pattern when reading those posts: pressure is introduced by awareness, which is introduced by growth.

    Life might have been chaotic back then—before therapy, before the self-help books piled next to the bed. Perhaps relationships weren’t stable. Perhaps feelings were erratic. However, it had a certain spontaneity.

    Someone said they missed the person who could accept anything without thinking about the emotional fallout. late-night road trips. impulsive friendships. risky partnerships that were exciting even though they weren’t long-lasting.

    Rarely does that type of life endure into adulthood. There are obligations. Self-awareness grows. Suddenly, the carefree version of you vanishes, to be replaced by a more circumspect and thoughtful version of yourself. It’s advancement. However, that isn’t how it always feels.

    Psychologists contend that familiarity plays a role in the nostalgia. People are habitual beings. Because they are familiar, even dysfunctional patterns can feel at ease. No matter how important it is, leaving them behind leaves an odd emotional void. Beneath the surface, something else is going on.

    People frequently lose entire identities that were constructed around particular settings or relationships when they undergo significant change. A person who has spent years managing a tumultuous relationship may develop extraordinary abilities to read emotions, anticipate conflict, and quickly adjust. The survival skills suddenly have nowhere to go when that relationship ends.

    Strangely, the person might miss that version of themselves because it was defined rather than because it was healthy. It can be subtly fascinating to watch this happen in real life. A friend who used to thrive on chaos now exhibits composure, organization, and emotional stability. Everyone says it’s beneficial. And in all honesty, it is. Nevertheless, that friend will occasionally acknowledge—almost sheepishly—that they long for the intensity of their former life. Not the pain. simply the sensation of life within it.


    Such little confessions abound on the internet. A former college student longs for the carefree optimism of their early twenties. Admitting that they sometimes miss the manic energy that once drove creativity is difficult for someone recovering from mental health issues. Someone else yearned for the days before obligations overshadowed every choice.

    Nostalgia is a complex emotion. You seem to have used fewer filters when you were younger. Less analysis. Self-correction is less frequent. Growth replaces that with awareness, which can feel heavy even though it is valuable.

    However, you don’t always want to go back just because you miss your former self. The majority of people actually say the opposite. They know why they had to make a change. They understand the emotional price of remaining unchanged. Nevertheless, the yearning persists, akin to recalling a home you once occupied that was unsafe but nevertheless contained remnants of your past.

    Many psychologists advise against attempting to recreate that previous identity as a healthy course of action. It involves determining which aspects of it were genuinely valuable.
