Courtney Budzyn Illness – The Health Battles Behind the Golden Retriever Fame Nobody Talks About

The majority of people learned about Courtney Budzyn from a golden retriever who had a knack for appearing incredibly unimpressed. With his half-lidded, drooping eyes and his “Linda” expressions, Tucker quickly rose to prominence as one of the most adored dogs on the internet. However, behind every video of that enormous, absurd, happy dog was a woman who had been quietly battling issues unrelated to viral fame for years.

Courtney has been candid about the intensity of her depression and anxiety, albeit in bits and pieces and on various platforms. Not the stylish, somewhat relatable type that receives favorable attention on Instagram. Real, crippling anxiety is the kind that follows you into everyday spaces and makes going about your everyday business feel like wading through concrete. She has talked about being severely bullied for years during her early years, and it’s difficult not to interpret that as the basis for everything that transpired later on, including the isolation, health issues, and ultimately Tucker.

The golden retriever arrived in 2018, and regardless of what people think about the workings of pet influence accounts, there is an indisputable sincerity to what Tucker appeared to do for Courtney. She stated it clearly, and she reiterated it in the grief video she shared following his passing in September of last year: “He literally saved my life.” That’s not the kind of statement someone would put in an engagement caption. There is substance to that statement.

Endometriosis is another. Courtney joined a long line of women who have had to fight to be taken seriously about a condition that affects about one in ten women but is routinely underdiagnosed by documenting her surgery and sharing her story publicly. She described the process, the recuperation, and the aggravation of having a chronic illness that is undetectable until it manifests itself in front of her audience without making it seem dramatic. Observing her handle that, it seems as though she has always felt more at ease with honesty than with curation.

The wheelchair is perhaps the detail that stops people cold, and it appears in search results almost like a footnote. Courtney stated in a video three years ago that she had been using one and that it had taken her a long time to heal from whatever had made her do it. She doesn’t owe anyone that she hasn’t explained every medical detail. However, the picture of a person who used to be in a wheelchair but now rollerblades with her dog conveys a message about perseverance that no inspirational post could match.

Someone who has dealt with depression and long-term physical illness may experience grief differently. Sadness already has a familiar and unwanted infrastructure. The loss wasn’t just about a dog when Tucker passed away on September 2nd, a few days after his lymphoma diagnosis was made public. It was about the creature that, according to her own account, had kept her restrained during the worst of it. Chemotherapy caused a perforation where the cancer had been, which led to an intestinal infection. Throughout the night, his body temperature increased. There was nothing left to do by morning.

In the video she uploaded, Courtney was holding a box of his ashes. “I know he was yours, too,” she said, apologizing to his millions of followers on various platforms. She then described his final weeks to them. Park visits. swimming. Beneath his fur, grass. He became excited about eating chicken with his medication every morning.

When you put Courtney Budzyn’s illness story together, it actually paints a picture of a person overcoming years of dealing with various levels of suffering. Not neatly. Not according to a schedule. But steadily. Tucker played a role in her success. She’s currently trying to figure out what steadily looks like without him. That portion is still developing.

      About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time โ€” often with very little independent information to guide them.
