Taika Waititi Illness – The Walking Stick, the Instagram Scare, and What Nobody’s Saying Out Loud

Thousands of people stopped mid-scroll at one point in late 2024. The Oscar-winning director of Jojo Rabbit, who once portrayed a vampire concerned about flat whites, Taika Waititi, had shared something on Instagram that didn’t appear to be a joke. The Spinoff claims that his face bore the weight of someone breaking bad news to his three million followers. People hesitated. They held out. Then the moment went by, leaving behind something more difficult to shake.

Even after the alarm subsided, that uneasiness persisted. It became ingrained in the growing perception that Waititi has changed in some way over the past few years, not significantly or in any way that has been officially announced, but in subtle, cumulative ways that point to a man who has come far closer to illness, suffering, and loss than his gleefully irreverent public persona typically lets on.

When Next Goal Wins was being produced in 2023, the first crack became apparent. Waititi, who is usually the most animated person on any set and is renowned for switching between directing and acting, as well as between serious and ridiculous in a single hour, arrived at the shoot with a walking stick and a wince. A few days prior to the cameras rolling, he had pinched his sciatic nerve. Painkillers were available.

According to reports, he was barely able to walk during the whole shoot. Not because a sciatic nerve injury is catastrophic, but rather because Waititi persevered through it, it is worthwhile to consider that particular detail. That is not a minor issue. It subtly conveys information about a person that would never be revealed by a press junket.

It seems as though the health-related incidents have continued to pile up around him. Cohen Holloway, a well-known actor in the Kiwi film industry, was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma in late 2025. This is one of the most deadly types of brain tumors ever discovered. Holloway talked candidly about Waititi’s support while she was bedridden and coping with the challenging everyday reality of a terminal illness. Even if someone is standing outside the hospital room rather than lying in it, prolonged exposure to a serious illness still has an impact on them.

Waititi’s connection to breast cancer is what truly personalizes her relationship with illness. He directed Save Your Life: Rinse & Repeat, a short campaign film for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, in October 2026. It included a steamy shower scene and his signature deadpan humor. However, he refrained from using publicist language when asked why he accepted the project.

He claimed that those close to him, including his mother and mother-in-law, had been affected by breast cancer. He declared, “My participation in this project was never in doubt.” Once you hear that line, it takes on a new meaning. He was not discussing awareness in a general sense. He was referring to the table in his own family.

The campaign was sparked by a startling discovery: only 37% of New Zealand women between the ages of 20 and 44 had performed a breast self-check in the previous month, despite 94% of them agreeing that it is important. Almost one in eight had never made any kind of check. Waititi’s first reaction was to wink and make a shower scene. Depending on who is looking, that may or may not land better than a billboard, but the effort seems well-deserved rather than exploitative.

The professional context of all of this should also be taken into account. Since Thor: Love and Thunder received mixed reviews in 2022, Waititi’s output has been more subdued. Some fans have been direct about a perceived cold streak on the internet. That might not be fair. Some of the silence may have been personal; grief, anxiety, and the particular weariness of witnessing someone you love go through something terrifying don’t stay neatly offset.

When you see everything come together—the walking stick, the Instagram scare, the friend’s diagnosis, the campaign inspired by a death in the family—you don’t see a director in crisis. It’s a person who has encountered death in ways that most public figures would rather not discuss. His character has always been lighthearted, evasive, and difficult to define. Perhaps that is still the case. Or perhaps the jokes are making more of an impact than they once did.

No formal announcement has been made. No official health disclosure or diagnosis is on file. However, a person’s approach to illness—the tasks they undertake, the friends they discreetly support, the suffering they endure on a movie set—says something genuine. The complete picture of Taika Waititi is still unknown. Simply put, it’s more difficult to ignore now than it was a few years ago.

      About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
