    Mikey Graham’s weight gain

A specific type of cruelty is reserved for former celebrities. Comment sections, radio hosts posing loaded questions, and the half-second pause before a camera lingers on someone for a bit too long are all examples of it. The internet did what it always does when Mikey Graham was lifted from underneath the Emirates Stadium stage in early June 2026 and settled onto a stool to perform a few songs with Boyzone in front of thousands of fans. It saw that he had a different appearance. It spoke loudly about it. Furthermore, the majority of those speaking had no idea what he had truly been through.

According to Mikey Graham, his weight gain was a symptom of something much more difficult to identify. He has openly discussed depression, the gradual disintegration that followed years spent inside the music industry’s machinery, and turning to alcohol when all else seemed meaningless. He talked about seeing an arena full of fans holding up posters for his bandmates while his own face was mostly missing from the crowd in a Sky documentary that was released last year. When Boyzone was at their best, he was 21. Marks from that kind of thing don’t always appear on the outside until they do.

Before Boyzone’s 2018 world tour, he had already made up his mind that something needed to change by the time his weight got close to 17 pounds. He gave up drinking. He began his training. He made the tour after losing four stones. There was little fanfare surrounding this real, hard-won turnaround—no magazine covers, no sponsored fitness posts. Just a man who has been abusing his body for years and is quietly attempting to regain it. It turns out that the story did not end with that discipline.

There were more challenges in the years that followed. 2024 marked the end of his 20-year marriage to Karen. In deleted social media posts, he admitted that he had been caught in what he described as a “comfort eating situation”—a term that seems almost casual until you consider the context. Weight slowly returned. Before the band’s farewell reunion performances at London’s Emirates Stadium in early 2026, he disclosed that he had shed three pounds using Mounjaro, a weight-loss drug that has become somewhat of a cultural flashpoint in conversations about body image and contemporary healthcare. He was making a public and obvious effort to get well enough to take the stage.

Watching the video of his performance at the Emirates—being lifted through the stage floor, sitting instead of standing, and leaving before the last songs while Ronan Keating reached out to touch his hand—makes it difficult not to feel something. Depending on who you were watching it with, it’s likely that the moment was either tender or just practical. It appears that Mikey Graham’s diminished involvement was neither a contractual afterthought nor a snub. Three years after telling a documentary camera that he couldn’t imagine going back and that doing so would mean returning to his former self, he showed up despite the fact that it was the limit of what his body and mind could provide that evening.

On Irish radio, his daughter Sienna, who oversaw and edited the shows’ visual production, stood up for him and calmly expressed her pride to the audience. Less composed, Mikey publicly criticized the radio host he believed had mistreated her. It is the kind of protective rage that enhances rather than diminishes a person’s humanity. It appears that he is not the subdued background character that some people might have thought.

As is always the case, there was some cruelty and a lot more warmth in the social media response. The screams Mikey heard at the Emirates were the loudest of the evening, according to fans who had followed Boyzone for thirty years. That might have greater significance for him than the weight loss figures, the names of the medications, and the detailed account of his body’s experiences. Or perhaps he’s still figuring out what all of this means. That also seems perfectly reasonable.

    About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
