Graeme Souness Illness – The Shocking Heart Diagnosis That Changed His Life at 38

Some football players quietly retire, playing golf on Saturdays, giving the occasional speech after dinner, or perhaps taking a job as a pundit when the phone rings. Graeme Souness never truly understood that perspective. A body that has been subtly battling him for nearly as long as he played the game itself has been the cruelest twist for a man who spent decades projecting physical dominance on the field.

In 1992, the diagnosis was made. At the age of 38, Souness was still employed, managing Liverpool, the team where he had made 354 appearances and won numerous trophies while playing. He was worn out. Not the typical fatigue that comes with managing a football team in the middle of a season, but a different kind of fatigue that he later said he had never encountered before. A headache would result from just one glass of wine. A pint was the same. He dismissed it as being a little disoriented. Explaining away the warning signs because the alternative explanation is too uncomfortable is what most people do, isn’t it?

His blood pressure was found to be dangerously elevated by a physician. Following a series of tests, coronary heart disease and three blocked arteries were discovered. Souness was undergoing a triple bypass on an operating table five days later. He was 38 years old, physically fit by most standards, and completely unaware that any of it would occur. He reportedly said, “How can this happen to me?” There is still no fully satisfactory response to this reasonable question.

The Souness story sticks with people, at least those who were paying attention, because the warning signs were so commonplace. fatigue. headaches. Nothing cinematic, nothing dramatic. On a football field, don’t clutch your chest. Just a slow, monotonous drift toward catastrophe. The British Heart Foundation has collaborated with Souness over the years to convey this crucial information. The way that silent heart disease is portrayed in movies is not how it manifests itself.

Then September 2024 arrived. Souness was watching a 2-0 friendly between Finland and England when he woke up at half past ten to brew a cup of tea and experienced chest pains. He had a coronary artery stent implanted a few days later. He credited his fifteen-year cardiologist for making him feel fantastic afterward. The casual way he discussed it on the BBC—”we had a bit of a setback last week”—said a lot about a man who seems to have come to terms with a heart that sometimes chooses to cause trouble.

Observing Souness over the past few years, it’s difficult to ignore how he’s practically turned into an unofficial spokesperson for serious illness. He sobbed during a live interview in April 2025 while discussing Epidermolysis Bullosa, a severe skin disorder that affects children. He has spoken out about it and moved in ways that the tough midfielder of the 1980s most likely would never have permitted in public. That change feels real rather than staged.

Souness, now 73, is back on television, but this time it’s on ITV’s celebrity game show The Box, which is hosted by Gary Lineker. After years of health-related news, it’s a lighter note, which may be appropriate. In one version of this tale, a man with a history of heart problems simply withdraws completely from public life. That’s not what Souness has done. It’s likely a mix of all three—stubbornness, a sincere love of the limelight, or just the disposition of someone who played professional football for decades.

Celebrity health isn’t really at the center of this larger picture. For millions of men who fit the same description—active, seemingly healthy, and subtly dismissing fatigue as nothing serious—Souness’s experience serves as an example. Tiredness was the only hint he had. It matters, which is why that line keeps coming up. It’s probably the most important lesson to learn from his story.

He’s still here, still speaking, and he still occasionally warns everyone about emergency protocols before assuring them that everything will be alright. Naturally, no one is able to determine whether the heart cooperates indefinitely. The plot of the upcoming chapter is still unknown. However, that was always the case with Graeme Souness.

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
