    Tom Chadbon Illness

Actor Tom Chadbon did not frequently make headlines. Over the course of five decades of British television and film, he worked consistently and dependably, appearing in the kinds of roles that keep a production together without demanding the limelight. Then, on July 25, 2026, he passed away quietly at home following what his representatives described as a brief illness. He was eighty.

Tom Chadbon’s illness was never made public. The official confirmation came from Fantom Events, a publishing and events company he had frequently worked with in his later years. Fantom Events is the kind of organization that hosts conventions, brings actors face to face with fans, and keeps older careers alive in a particular and affectionate way. His family did not provide a statement beyond the grief a family carries in private. They made a short social media post. They claimed that he was consistently a kind and amiable man to work with. That’s sufficient sometimes.

The majority of people who are familiar with the name Tom Chadbon instantly associate it with a particular afternoon in 1979. In the Doctor Who serial City of Death, which was co-written by Douglas Adams, the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and partially filmed on location in Paris, he portrayed Duggan, a blunt and physically enthusiastic private investigator. The episode continues to be the most watched story in Doctor Who’s history, with over 16 million viewers—a figure that seems almost unreal by today’s standards. Something about that is subtly amazing. Chadbon worked in television for almost fifty years, but his most well-known role was in a story about the Mona Lisa with a cameo from John Cleese in his early thirties, opposite Tom Baker.

In 1986, he made a comeback to Doctor Who, co-starring with Colin Baker as Merdeen in The Mysterious Planet. The fact that he returned revealed something about how the show’s producers remembered him: you don’t bring someone back unless the initial impression was memorable. Beyond those two appearances, Chadbon made a career out of precisely the kind of work that British television relies on: dependable character parts, recurring guest roles, and faces you recognize but can’t always name. Between 2008 and 2011, he worked for Casualty for three years as Henry Williams, the hospital’s director of critical care. This position required a certain level of authority without being ostentatious. Alongside Charles Dance and Diana Rigg, he starred in Peep Show, The Bill, Midsomer Murders, and the 1997 ITV adaptation of Rebecca.

He played High Septon Maynard in the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones in 2017, which was his last notable television role. For the second time in his career, he was cast in one of the most popular television shows at the age of about 71, despite having a minor part in the show’s massive machinery. There’s a feeling that he got into important productions in various eras by being good enough and accessible enough for them to find him, rather than by pursuing them.

At 80, it’s difficult to avoid experiencing the unique sadness of a brief illness. Not the protracted, well-documented conflict that permits some public preparation, but one that proceeded swiftly and left little time for anyone, possibly even Chadbon, to comprehend what was taking place fully. His family has kept the precise diagnosis a secret, which seems fitting for a man who has dedicated his professional life to telling the stories of others rather than his own.

The work is what’s left. More than a hundred credits. Almost fifty years. Millions of people have watched and rewatched a series of Doctor Who scenes in which the Fourth Doctor and a stocky blond detective fight their way through Paris. Most people will probably choose to remember Tom Chadbon in that way—slightly ridiculous, utterly endearing. It is possible to leave behind worse legacies.

    About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
