Jonathan Toews Illness – How Long COVID Nearly Ended the Career of Hockey’s Most Decorated Captain

Witnessing someone who was once regarded as the most complete hockey player of his generation abruptly leave the game is somewhat heartbreaking. There was no formal retirement ceremony for Jonathan Toews. There were no heartfelt rinkside tributes or farewell laps. He simply stopped playing, and as the months stretched into years, the hockey world continued without him, though it never completely forgot about him.

When Toews declared in December 2020 that he would be sidelined indefinitely due to what was then only described as an undisclosed condition, the illness that forced him off the ice first came to light. Most people didn’t fully understand the diagnosis that finally surfaced: Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, linked to a COVID-19 infection he believes he acquired in February of that year. The term “CIRS” is not widely used. It’s difficult, disputed in some medical circles, and profoundly misinterpreted by those who haven’t experienced it. For years, Toews was forced to live inside.

Beyond the hockey and trophies, his story is noteworthy because it sheds light on the protracted, difficult, and frequently undetectable nature of post-viral illness. Due to extreme exhaustion and inflammation, Toews was unable to play during the entire pandemic-shortened 2021 NHL season. In an attempt to persevere, he went back to Chicago for two more years before discreetly leaving once more in August 2023. When he signed with Winnipeg this past July, he hadn’t participated in a professional game since April 2023.

During those two years of absence, he sought treatments ranging from traditional medicine to, ultimately, something much less traditional. Toews underwent what can only be called an aggressive detox for five weeks in the fall of 2024 at an Ayurvedic facility in India. This detox included daily enemas, medicated ghee butter, induced vomiting, and prolonged, intense massage sessions. On the surface, it seems like the kind of thing people try when they’ve run out of better options. And it most likely was, in a way. “When you try enough different things, and they don’t work, it’s pretty frustrating,” he stated during his July 2025 press conference in Winnipeg. Admitting that has a subtle dignity.

The majority of Western sports doctors wouldn’t recommend the Ayurvedic method. However, it’s also difficult to disagree with a man who merely states that he felt things were moving in the right direction afterward. The medical community is keeping an eye on things. Toews’s return is significant not only for hockey fans but also for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who are still dealing with long-term COVID symptoms, according to Dr. Kieran Quinn, an internal medicine physician at Toronto’s Sinai Health who studies long-term COVID treatments. People’s perceptions of what is feasible change when a familiar face recovers, even in part.

Naturally, there’s a chance that the return to the NHL won’t be easy. Toews is 37 years old. It has been two complete seasons since he played competitively. The players are younger, and the game is faster now. Even at his peak, during those Cup-winning years in Chicago, he was more well-known for his presence than his flash; he was the type of player who made wise choices under duress and uplifted those around him. It’s really unclear if that still exists in a body that battled its own immune system for five years.

Toews has come to terms with the uncertainty in some way. In Winnipeg, he talked about feeling fortunate, a statement that seemed sincere rather than staged coming from a man the hockey community had long referred to as “Captain Serious.” His hometown, where a sports complex already bears his name, greeted him with the special warmth that comes from events that seem to have been meant to be. This season, the Jets needed something intangible. Toews has always worked with intangibles.

Observing this from a distance gives the impression that Jonathan Toews’ illness story is more than just a tale of a sports comeback. It’s a little more nuanced than that; it serves as a reminder that even the most decorated and disciplined people can be betrayed by their bodies, and that healing seldom happens according to a schedule that anyone would choose. There are plenty of young stars in the NHL at the moment. However, only one player—who has three Stanley Cups and a hard-won knowledge of what his body truly needs—is coming back to it after five weeks of induced vomiting in India. Whatever comes next, it’s worth watching.

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
