For almost twenty-seven years, Mariska Hargitay has appeared on American television screens every fall. That’s a long time for a close-up of your face. It’s long enough for viewers to pick up on details, such as a slightly altered jaw angle or a softened line, and develop whole theories based on those changes. She has been the subject of rumors for years, and she has, to be honest, handled them with more consideration than most celebrities.

Nothing has been confirmed by her. But she’s said a lot. Hargitay discussed plastic surgery in a 2013 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal with a candor that shocked many at the time. She acknowledged that she had previously opposed it, in part because her father detested makeup in general and would tell her to wash her face if she wore any. However, her perspective had changed. “Now that I’m older,” she stated, “I think women should do whatever they want to make themselves feel good.” She went on to say that although she still liked the natural look, she was totally in favor of anything that would make someone feel refreshed. Compared to the binary this-or-that framing that most people anticipate from these discussions, that is a more nuanced stance.

The length of the public record is what makes Hargitay’s case intriguing. People have spent a lot of time comparing the thousands of hours of her face that were captured under studio lighting over the course of three decades due to twenty-seven seasons of network television. The SVU-focused Reddit community has engaged in extensive debates on the subject, and the consensus that tends to surface is actually fairly generous: most people come to the conclusion that, if she has done anything, it’s very little. Normal signs of aging can be seen in candid photos, which are those taken without the use of professional makeup or controlled lighting. Lines of a smile. The area around the eyes has softened. The accumulation of sixty-one years naturally on a face that has been working nonstop for the majority of those years.

The most persistent question is the one about Botox. The smoothness of her forehead and the quality of her skin tone in recent years are consistent with moderate injectable use, according to some observers and a few publicly commenting cosmetic experts. That is not the same as surgical enhancement, and it’s the kind of thing that has become so commonplace in the entertainment sector that criticizing it almost seems like a category error. Similar to how they use a good moisturizer, many women Hargitay’s age use neuromodulators both on and off screen. Over the past ten years, the distinction between skincare and cosmetic maintenance has become increasingly hazy.

Speaking of moisturizer, Hargitay revealed what has become her most frequently cited beauty revelation in an interview with Allure in September 2025: she credits Cetaphil’s Hydrating and Firming Cream as a recent favorite. She explained that aging skin becomes thin and dry and that this specific product “plumps everything up in such a beautiful way.” Her description felt more authentic than sponsored. She mentioned that her daughter follows a 156-step beauty regimen. In contrast, Hargitay’s concludes with bubbles rising to the bathtub ceiling. It’s difficult not to find that endearing.

Wearing a Carolina Herrera gown and longer hair than anyone had anticipated, she made her Cannes debut in May 2025 with a documentary about her mother, Jayne Mansfield. Observers noted that she appeared more at ease and less constrained by the real-world limitations of portraying a working NYPD detective on screen, and the reaction was mostly one of gratitude. Observing someone like Hargitay navigate this specific conversation across decades gives me the impression that she has discovered something truly helpful: the loudest statement you can make about aging is to just keep showing up, look like yourself, and not worry too much about the rest.

    About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time โ€” often with very little independent information to guide them.
