Rachael Carpani Illness – The Silent Battle That Took Australia’s Beloved Actress Too Soon

Finding out that someone who brought so much warmth to the screen was also carrying so much pain off it is somewhat heartbreaking. The Australian actress Rachael Carpani, who most people will always remember as Jodi Fountain-McLeod riding across a dusty paddock, passed away early on a Sunday morning in Sydney on December 7, 2025. She was forty-five. Her family acknowledged that it was the end of a protracted battle with chronic illness, but they also described it as unexpected. It is possible for both to be true. The harsh math of these circumstances is that.

Carpani’s decision to speak was what set her apart from many others in her position. Openly, publicly, and occasionally painfully. She had endometriosis, a condition that causes tissue resembling the uterine lining to grow outside the womb, causing inflammation, chronic pain, and, in many cases, a kind of exhaustion that doesn’t always show on the outside, for what her own accounts suggest was almost twenty years. Invisible illness is not particularly tolerated in the entertainment industry. Nevertheless, Carpani discussed it.

Things significantly worsened in 2021. She ended up in intensive care before surgery after being admitted to the hospital with acute abdominal pain, the kind that drives people to emergency rooms in the middle of the night. In addition to her long-standing endometriosis, she was diagnosed with adenomyosis around the same time. Having both of these conditions at the same time is a significant burden because they are related but separate conditions. She thanked her doctors and shared the experience on Instagram in a way that felt more like a woman attempting to understand what her body was doing to her than a celebrity post.

It’s difficult to ignore how frequently chronic illness is downplayed in public discourse, especially when it affects women. Approximately 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide suffer from conditions like endometriosis, but in many nations, the average time to diagnosis is still between seven and twelve years. Carpani was aware of this. She stated as much. It’s worthwhile to acknowledge that she used whatever platform she had to challenge that silence.

Throughout it all, her career went on. That’s amazing in and of itself. She left Australia years ago to pursue her career in the United States, where she eventually returned after being cast in a CBS pilot, appearing in NCIS: Los Angeles, and having a recurring role in The Glades. She joined the cast of Home and Away in August 2024 and played Claudia Salini until her passing. In a sense, she worked until the very end.

Although her family’s statement did not name a specific diagnosis, reports also surfaced that mentioned chronic Lyme disease as part of her health picture. They have the right to use the phrase “long battle with chronic illness” because it is purposefully broad. It’s evident that the body she inhabited had been severely strained for a considerable amount of time, and she continued to appear while carrying that burden in private.

Matt Passmore, her co-star and ex-partner, put it simply: “Knowing her was the greatest gift.” Her longtime co-star in McLeod’s Daughters, Bridie Carter, referred to her as “our beautiful girl.” These aren’t the polished remarks of people reciting a script written by a publicist. They read like those who have lost a loved one.

In the days following a death like this, there’s a sense that a person’s public persona—the one on the poster, the one in the interview—was never truly who they were. Carpani appeared to recognize that about herself. She discussed her illness because she seemed genuinely unwilling to pretend that everything was okay when it wasn’t, rather than because it made for interesting content. More than any part she played, her honesty might be the thing that people remember the most.

    About

Private Therapy Clinics is an independent online magazine covering therapy, mental health, and wellbeing across the United Kingdom. We are not a clinic, and we do not provide medical or therapeutic services. What we do instead is tell the stories of an industry that rarely tells its own.
The world of private healthcare in Britain is famously discreet. It operates behind frosted glass and understated brass plaques, from Harley Street consulting rooms to residential retreats in the countryside. Yet demand for these services has never been higher. NHS waiting lists have grown, conversations about mental health have moved into the open, and more people than ever are weighing up private care for the first time — often with very little independent information to guide them.
